A number of customers have asked me recently about jewelry care and cleaning, so I thought I’d do a short series of posts on the topic.
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION…
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say about their favorite pieces of jewelry, “I love it so much! I never take it off!” Don’t do this. Wearing your jewelry throughout all of your daily and nightly activities not only puts it at risk of physical damage like scratches, dents, and breakage, it also invariably exposes it to all kinds of chemicals and substances that can stain or damage the finish.
You should take off your jewelry when you,
- wash the dishes
- wash your face or shower
- exercise or play sports
- apply lotion or sunscreen
- do housework
You all are pretty smart, and I don’t think I need to explain most of these. It may seem like wearing your jewelry while you wash your hands or shower is pretty harmless, and mostly it is, but soaps leave a film that dulls the stones and metals of your jewelry and leaves it looking dingy. Nobody wants that. And don’t forget about that drain! I’ll never forget how sad I was watching my diamond stud slip through the shower drain at the gym! It happened so fast, and I was sick about it! Which brings us to exercise. Obviously exercise and sports will not only get your accessories dirty, but you also risk injury, loss, etc.
I guess you know my secret now. I’m totally guilty of all of these! I definitely have a checkered past of abusing my jewelry, but I’m really trying, and I think I’m doing better. Nobody is perfect, and that’s why we have ways of cleaning and repairing your jewelry! In my next post I’ll share which cleaning products I like best, as well as some do it yourself concoctions I’ve found that work!
